9. My Triggers

Triggers occur when your brain associates events together.

Smoking triggers develop when the brain learns to associate certain events, emotions, or environments with nicotine and its rewarding effects. The habit is built and maintained by learned behaviours and psychological associations. Through repeated smoking in the same situations, the brain links everyday cues—such as drinking coffee, feeling stressed, driving, or socialising—to the expectation of nicotine, so that these cues alone can later spark cravings. This learning process happens automatically, with smoking-related cues activating brain systems involved in reward, habit, memory, boredom, and stress, often before conscious thought occurs. As a result, urges can feel sudden and powerful, even when the body is not experiencing physical withdrawal. These triggers may be situational, emotional, or social, but they all reflect learned associations rather than a lack of willpower, which is why quitting involves gradually weakening and replacing these brain‑based links over time.

Smoking is driven more by the mind than the body—about 90% of the habit comes from psychological triggers such as stress, routine, emotions, and environment, while only around 10% is linked to physical nicotine cravings. This means that once you learn to recognise and eliminate your triggers, you are already winning the biggest part of the battle. By changing your mindset and breaking those conditioned habits, you gain control over your actions, making it much easier to overcome the remaining physical cravings and successfully live smoke-free.

  • Prepare to manage your triggers. Once you know what makes you smoke, you have won 90% of the battle.
  • Write down your triggers.
  • Go through your triggers list every day.
  • Evade your triggers. Do not linger in situations that make you want to smoke.
  • Set rules, respect them, and be strict with yourself.

There are two categories of triggers: Internal triggers and External triggers
