Tobacco smoke comprises approximately 4,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic, and around 80 of them are recognized as cancer-causing (carcinogenic).

Quit smoking is one of the most effective ways to prevent these diseases linked to toxins that are present in tobacco smoke. It is the most significant step a smoker can take to enhance their health.

Tar

The sticky, brown substance found in tobacco smoke contains hundreds of chemicals, many of which are known carcinogens. It’s not the same tar as the one used in the construction of roads and roofs. In tobacco smoke, tar is released as tiny particles that can pass through cigarette filters and be inhaled into the lungs.

The tar in the smoke can paralyze and ultimately kill the cilia in the lungs. Cilia are tiny hair structures that surround the airways and help remove particles and pollutants. When cilia are damaged, they become less effective at clearing out tobacco smoke and other harmful particles, increasing the risk of lung disease in smokers.

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is one of the main substances released from burning tobacco. Exposure to tobacco smoke can result in symptoms like irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat due to formaldehyde. It is linked to an elevated risk of nasopharyngeal cancer, as well as cancers of the nose, oral cavity, and throat.

Hydrogen cyanide

This is considered to be the most toxic agent of tobacco smoke, a prevailing cause in the short and long-term diseases associated with hydrogen cyanide. Mainly, it’s with the inhaling of this gas, which plays a contributing factor in restlessness, nausea, vomiting, and weakness. Not only this, it also damages cilia, which is the lung’s natural cleaning system, leading to the accumulation of foreign particles and harmful chemicals in the respiratory tract.

Benzene

Also, exposure to benzene gas is associated with an increased risk of leukemia, a type of cancer that develops in the bone marrow of a person.

Cadmium

The study based on the International Agency for Research on Cancer says this is the cancer-causing heavy metal that is a part of the injurious tobacco smoke and does a great deal of damage to the cells that line the blood vessels of the body. Having increased levels of cadmium in the body becomes the leading cause of heart disease and lung cancer.

Nicotine

This chemical, named nicotine, grows naturally in tobacco plants. Being the known addictive drug in tobacco products, it interacts with the brain to give out pleasurable sensations, which ultimately leads to more tobacco. It isn’t the primary cause of diseases from the use of tobacco, but it keeps smokers hooked to more tobacco, making them ultimately more prone to harmful components of tobacco smoke.
