Below is a list of some common health-related issues caused by smoking.
COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is responsible for breathing difficulties. There are two primary types of COPD: chronic bronchitis, characterized by a persistent cough with mucus, and emphysema, which involves progressive lung damage over time.
Lung Cancer and other cancers
A recent study indicates that smokers can significantly improve their lung health by quitting, as healthy cells begin to replace some of the tobacco-damaged and cancer-prone cells.

Heart disease
As known, the most common reason for heart disease is smoking, which is due to the chemicals in the smoke that lead to these issues. It damages the heart and blood vessels, which increases the chances of developing atherosclerosis, a condition that includes plaque build-up in the arteries.
Over time, fatty deposits in the arteries lead to the condition of coronary arteries, which reduces the blood flow and increases the risk of heart attack. Smoking accelerates this process.
Asthma
Smoke irritates the airways, leading to swelling, narrowing, and an accumulation of sticky mucus, similar to an asthma flare-up. This is why smoking can trigger asthma attacks more frequently.
Chronic bronchitis
The chemicals in cigarette smoke majorly compromise your lungs’ defences against infections, narrow air passages, cause swelling in the airways, and damage air sacs—all of which contribute to COPD. Additionally, using other tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes and cigars, also raises your risk of developing this condition.
Emphysema
The leading cause of emphysema is smoking. Cigarette smoke is the prevailing cause of the destruction of lung tissue, ultimately leading to irritation in the airways. Cigarette smoke is known to cause inflammation and damages the cilia. This leads to irritated and destroyed cilia that cause swollen airways, ultimately leading to mucus production and difficulty clearing the airways.
Stroke
The chances of stroke are increased to a great extent through smoking as this leads to damaging blood vessels, happens to triggers plague or the formation of clots, or leads to the weakening of blood vessels. The main issue arises when this formed clot travels to the brain or if blood vessels in the brain burst, which leads to a stroke. Having a direct linkage with the cause of stroke, people who quit smoking can easily lower the chance of stroke.
Diabetes
Smoking increases the risk of smokers developing type 2 diabetes to 30% to 40% more than that of non–smokers.
Cataract
Smoking leads to some minute alterations in the eyes that can result in vision loss. Someone who smokes has twice the chance of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) as compared to non-smokers. Additionally, you are two to three times more likely to develop cataracts than those who do not smoke.
Ulcer
Smokers have a higher likelihood of developing peptic ulcers, which are painful sores in the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. Quitting smoking increases the chances of healing these ulcers. Additionally, smoking raises the risk of infection from Helicobacter pylori.
Liver damage
Smoking can negatively affect your entire body by harming your health in multiple ways. One way can include scarring your liver. Smoking increases the risk of liver conditions, such as NAFLD and cirrhosis, primarily because it increases the number of toxins in your body.
Gangrene
As simply explained, any process that causes trauma to the skin and underlying tissue, such as frostbite, raises the risk of gangrene. This risk is even higher for individuals with underlying conditions that affect blood flow to the injured area. Smokers are particularly at an increased risk of developing gangrene.
Impotence
If you smoke and are worried about erectile dysfunction (ED), now is the ideal time to quit. As studies reveal, men who smoke are approximately twice as likely to experience ED compared to non-smokers. Smoking restricts blood flow to all parts of the body, including the genitals, making it more difficult to achieve and maintain an erection.
Irregular menstruation or menopause
Individuals who smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day are more likely to experience irregular menstrual cycles compared to non-smokers. Additionally, smokers tend to reach menopause one to two years earlier than those who do not smoke and may also face more severe menopausal symptoms.
Infertility
Smoking can reduce fertility, making it harder to conceive. It may adversely affect hormone production and harm the reproductive system. Additionally, smoking can damage the DNA in sperm.
Sudden infant death syndrome and infant health problems
Infants having both smoking parents have a significant risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndrome (SIUDS), which is sudden and unknown. This prevails more commonly in infants, with mothers smoking more.
Infants who have parents who have smoked through the times they were pregnant, as well as infants who are exposed to passive smoking after birth, face a heightened risk of SIDS. The risk is not based on one factor; rather, it entails the frequency of cigarettes, number of cigarettes, number of smokers, and the radius of the pregnant mother and passive smoking.
Oral health damage
Smoking can adversely affect your oral health. Individuals who smoke are at an increased risk of developing oral cancer, experiencing gum issues, losing teeth, suffering from decay on the roots of teeth, and encountering complications after tooth extractions and gum or oral surgeries.
Vision loss
Smoking can result in vision loss. Research indicates that it raises the risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome.
Impaired immune system
Cigarette smoke diminishes the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and impacts their chemotaxis, kinesis, and cell signalling. It also inhibits the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which undermines the ability of neutrophils and other innate immune cells to eliminate pathogens.
Brain damage
Smoking tobacco and inhaling nicotine can damage any part of the body, including the brain.
Long-term or heavy smoking is linked to higher chances of cognitive decline, memory loss, and brain damage.
Additionally, there is strong evidence that smoking increases the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Studies and meta-analyses show that current smokers have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s compared to non-smokers.
